Adviser: Kitzhaber focus on jobs not environment

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- The new natural resources adviser to Gov. John Kitzhaber says his focus in the Legislature will be on jobs, not mainstream environmental issues.

Richard Whitman said Friday he will be working for passage of Senate Bill 766, which would streamline land use and environmental permits for companies that build on lands already zoned industrial.

The land use group 1000 Friends of Oregon was involved in drafting the bill. Spokesman Eric Stachon says the group thinks the bill will help keep industrial development inside urban growth boundaries rather than spreading into agricultural lands.

Whitman is moving to the natural resources adviser job from his current post as director of the Department of Land Conservation and Development. Before that he oversaw the natural resources section of the Oregon Department of Justice.
