ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) — The Wallowa County sheriff’s office has taken temporary control of a remote northeast Oregon ranch and is paying to haul in hay to feed more than 120 Lusitano horses.
Sheriff Fred Steen tells The Oregonian the horses are malnourished. He says some have died but the cause of the deaths hasn’t been determined yet.
Steen says not enough hay was stockpiled for the winter at Carpe Diem Farm. Deputies are struggling to provide water for the horses.
Typically authorities would move such animals to another location for better care, but the farm is buried under 4 feet of snow.
