SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds dressed in red union gear attended a 70-minute Salem rally on Saturday to show support for union workers in Wisconsin facing a hardnosed proposal from the state’s governor to end collective bargaining.
The event was organized by the left-leaning MoveOn.org political organization in conjunction with dozens of unions, environmentalists and other activist groups.
With chants including “What’s disgusting? Union busting” and signs that criticized Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, locals say it was one of the largest left-leaning rallies in Salem since George W. Bush took office in 2001.
The Salem Statesman-Journal reports there was no official crowd estimate.
Veteran union organizer Bobbie Cadethere says there were at least 1,000 people in attendance.
