Marshall holds off Southern Methodist 64-62

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Damier Pitts scored 19 points to lead Marshall to a 64-62 win over Southern Methodist on Saturday night.

The Thundering Herd (20-9, 8-6 Conference USA) trailed 46-43 with less than 10 minutes to play before scoring nine straight and taking the lead for good, 52-46, with 5:23 remaining.

Robert Nyakundi nailed a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to pull the Mustangs (17-11, 8-6) within two, 62-60, but Pitts knocked down two free throws on the ensuing possession to seal the win for Marshall.

DeAndre Kane added 13 points and Tirrell Baines had 12 for the Thundering Herd, who scored 19 points off 15 turnovers en route to their fifth consecutive victory.

Papa Dia scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for SMU, which shot 24 of 43 from the field (55.8 percent) and outscored Marshall in the paint 36-28.

Nyakundi and Jeremia Samarrippas each had 11 points for the Mustangs.
