HALEIWA, Hawaii (AP) — The Eddie won’t go.

The three-month holding period for the Quicksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau surf tournament on Oahu’s North Shore ended Monday. The big-wave invitational was last held in December 2009.

The tournament was nearly held Jan. 20 with thousands of fans showing up at Waimea Bay. But it was called off because of inconsistent 20-foot surf.

Waves must be at least 20-feet for the competition to be held. Since “The Eddie” began in 1984, it has only been held eight times.

The tournament is named after the Hawaiian surfer. Aikau was last seen in 1978 paddling out for help after the voyaging canoe Hokulea capsized in the Molokai Channel. The crew was eventually rescued but Aikau was never seen again.
