ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Albany, Ore., police say an Ashland hockey coach is accused of trying to mail a 20-pound box of marijuana to New Jersey when the team bus passed through Albany.

Police Capt. Eric Carter says postal workers grew suspicious about the package dropped off Friday and alerted police. Carter says 39-year-old Erik Bjorn Hamlet surrendered to Albany police on Saturday.

Police estimate the box contained about $65,000 worth of pot.

Hamlet was booked into the Linn County Jail for investigation of marijuana possession and distribution; he was later released on bail. Hamlet did not immediately return a phone message and e-mail for comment.

Police say Hamlet is assistant coach and co-general manager of the Southern Oregon Spartan Junior A hockey team of the Northern Pacific Hockey League. The team was headed to a game in Vancouver, Wash.
