Some afternoon buses on snow routes

Slushy snow at Yacolt, Amboy and higher elevations have prompted Battle Ground schools administrators to cancel afternoon kindergarten and preschool at Yacolt and Tukes Valley primary schools today.

In addition, after-school buses will operate on snow routes from the following schools. Dismissal will be at the normal time: Battle Ground High; Tukes Valley Primary and Middle; Yacolt Primary; and Amboy Middle School.

(Update: Morning kindergarten students at Tukes Valley and Yacolt primary schools will be held at school for afternoon release, as midday bus runs were canceled. The district is notifying all affected parents.)

Higher elevation snow affected several Battle Ground School District bus routes this morning.

Spokesman Gregg Herrington said five buses arrived late at Amboy Middle School, and two buses were late at Yacolt Primary School this morning. At Tukes Valley Primary, one bus was late and didn’t arrive until 10:42 a.m. — two hours late.

The late Tukes Valley bus encountered difficulty on a hill on Berry Road. The driver saw slush on the road and several vehicles having trouble, and stopped before trying to descend the hill. A crew came out and chained up the bus, which proceeded safely to school.

The difficulty in navigating slushy roads, coupled with the fact it was snowing and sticking to the playground at Amboy and Yacolt, left district administrators concerned about afternoon conditions.

The weather forecast calls for continued poor weather all day.
