Bill: Put tuition hikes toward aid

Measure encourages higher education for the middle class

In recent years, tuition at Washington’s public universities and colleges has gone up and up and up. Millions of dollars are now diverted to financial aid, a somewhat effective means to soften the blow on lower-income families and students. So who gets squeezed most? Why, the middle class, of course: Too many assets to qualify for numerous student grants or loans, hardly enough to elude the bite of relentless tuition hikes.

In Our View: Cheers & Jeers

Flashing lights may save a life; La Center should join casino fight

Cheers: To flashing lights and other enhancements at the foot of C Street in downtown Vancouver, where more than one person has driven onto westbound state Highway 14 going the wrong way. At least one accident resulted in a death. Since C Street was modified from one-way to two-way traffic as far south as Seventh Street, transportation officials have consistently said the wrong-way signs and other warnings there met the standard. To their credit, they made the improvements anyway. The new solar-powered perimeter lights, plus some additional tree-trimming to make the signs stand out better, cost about $18,000. That’s not much money compared with the cost of even one more serious accident. Jeers: To the city of La Center’s decision not to join a coalition led by Clark County that will seek to block the Cowlitz Tribe’s casino plans. The Bureau of Indian Affairs recently granted the tribe permission to establish its reservation near the La Center Junction, and to operate a large casino there. There are many reasons to oppose this project, including its low-wage jobs and promotion of unhealthy habits. But La Center would seem to have an even more important stake: A casino will likely out-compete the cardrooms that currently form the city’s tax base.
