PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A six-cent increase in Oregon’s gasoline tax has kicked in, and it’s expected to help push the price of gasoline higher.

Pump prices have been rising steadily in Oregon for about two years, and AAA of Oregon’s weekly surveys put the statewide average at above $3 a gallon.

That isn’t close to the high that AAA of Oregon recorded in mid-2008 of nearly $4.30 a gallon. But it’s well above the low of less than $1.75 a gallon during the holiday season of 2008.

The increase will make Oregon’s total tax 30 cents a gallon. Combined with fee increases already in effect, the gasoline tax increase will make $300 million a year available for road repairs.
