Try This: Ring in fun for new year

Many of this weekend’s entertainment options were linked to Friday night New Year’s Eve celebrations, but there is still fun to be had.

Fort Vancouver is closed today but will reopen Sunday. Visitors can take in the Vancouver landmark’s palisade and nine buildings, which have been reconstructed near their original locations. Along the way, visitors can see what life was like when Fort Vancouver was the most important settlement in the Pacific Northwest.

Just west of the fort, visitors can stroll to the Village, which is made up of two houses. The Village housed employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company and their families, beginning with the establishment of the fort in 1829.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The fort is closed today.

Admission: $3; $5 per family; free for children 15 and younger.

The fort is just one of several entertainment options in Clark County and beyond. Others include a Celtic concert, a production from Imago Theatre and the latest exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

1. Celtic performers share stage

The Wind and Strings Celtic Band will headline a concert in Vancouver. The band will perform with guest Celtic autoharpist David Robison. The concert is a benefit for the Winter Hospitality Overflow shelters in Vancouver.

When: 7 p.m. Sunday.

2. Imago takes fans to the ‘ZooZoo’

Imago Theatre’s holiday production of “ZooZoo” combines mime, dance, music and special effects that feature polar bears, anteaters, frogs, rabbits and penguins. The production is recommended for children 3 and older.

When: 7 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Imago Theatre, 17 S.E. Eighth Ave., Portland.

Admission: $29, $25 for students and seniors, and $16 for children 16 and younger.

3. Museum honors good design with exhibit

The latest exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is “Design Zone.” The interactive, hands-on exhibit lets visitors explore creative concepts to learn the processes and tools needed to create a successful design. It is organized into three zones that highlight the importance of science and mathematical thinking in art, music and engineering.

“Design Zone” is on display through May 30.

Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Admission: $12; $9 for seniors 63 and older and children 3-13; $2 on the first Sunday of each month.

4. Classic toy celebrated in museum exhibit

Children and kids at heart can celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Tinkertoy construction set in “Tinkertoy: Build Your Imagination.” The latest exhibit at the Portland Children’s Museum features giant replicas of the classic toy. It includes educational activities that let children create working solutions to real-world challenges.

“Tinkertoy” is on display through Jan. 23.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Sundays; and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Admission: $8; $7 for seniors 55 and older and active military members; free for children younger than 1. $2 parking. Free admission 4-8 p.m. the first Friday of each month.
