SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chilean officials and the U.S. Geological Survey say a magnitude-7.1 quake has shaken southern Chile, sending hundreds fleeing for higher ground for fear that it would generate a tsunami.
Chilean navy officials say there is no threat of a tsunami, however. There are no immediate reports of deaths or damages, but some cell-phone communications were lost in the quake, which the USGS says was centered in the Araucania region, 370 miles (595 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago.
