AMSTERDAM (AP) — Former Netherlands national team midfielder Aron Winter says he has agreed to become technical director and coach of FC Toronto.

Winter, a former player with Ajax and Inter Milan, says in an interview with Dutch daily De Telegraaf that he planned to fly to Canada on Monday to sign with the Major League Soccer club.

He told the newspaper that he “had a good feeling” after visiting the club last week.

It had appeared Paul Mariner, the former Plymouth Arygle manager, would become Toronto’s coach.

The 43-year-old coaches a junior Ajax team and is a former assistant coach with the Netherlands under-20 team. Toronto wanted a coach with experience in Ajax’s style, “and they’ve come to the right man,” he said.

Winter had six goals in 84 appearances for the Netherlands from 1987-00.
