IRVING, Texas (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says Jason Garrett is the new coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The person confirmed the decision Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Cowboys had not yet announced Garrett’s hiring. The team scheduled a Thursday afternoon news conference.

Garrett went 5-3 as interim coach after he replaced Wade Phillips, who was fired after the team started 1-7. Garrett had been the team’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Owner Jerry Jones interviewed receivers coach Ray Sherman and Miami assistant head coach Todd Bowles for the job, but Garrett was always considered the front-runner.
