PORT ORCHARD (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says a man reported by a woman driver as a police impersonator in Kitsap County was really a King County sheriff’s fire investigator.

Trooper Krista Hedstrom says the man told troopers on Tuesday that he was driving home Monday in his work vehicle when he saw a woman driver talking on her cell phone. He says he motioned at her to get off the phone and held up a sign that said “Sheriff” to show his position of authority.

The woman left the highway and called 911.

King County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart says the unidentified investigator contacted troopers when he saw news reports about the incident.

Urquhart says the man flashed his lights and sounded his siren, but did not attempt to pull the woman over.

The spokesman tells the Kitsap Sun the sheriff’s office will investigate.
