January’s “New Works” show at Art on the Boulevard features several artists, including Ridgefield’s Marilyn Hocking and Jennifer Williams. There is a reception today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the gallery, 210 W. Evergreen Blvd. Suite 300, Vancouver, as part of downtown’s First Friday Art Walk.

Hocking, 59, was the featured artist for December, and some of her pieces will carry over this month. Hocking works primarily in pastels, and favors still lifes.

“I like to do paintings of things that are very ordinary and mundane, something you wouldn’t necessarily think of as a work of art,” she said.

“Ready for the Party,” for example, is a painting of grapes, cheese, bread and a bottle of wine.

“I like to encourage people to reframe how they look at the everyday world around them,” she said.

For her contributions to “New Works,” Williams, 38, will display two land and water horizon compositions: “Rising Tide” and “Drift.” She experimented with texture on both, layering cedar bark strips over wood panels, painting over the bark, then sanding.

Williams is also working on a large commissioned piece for the new Vancouver Community Library. Called “A River of Knowledge,” it measures 4 feet by 14 feet.

Williams will have a related solo show at Art on the Boulevard in July. Called “Written In Water,” it will combine words and river images.

Bits ’n’ Pieces appears Mondays and Fridays. If you have a story you’d like to share, call Courtney Sherwood 360-735-4561, or e-mail features@columbian.com.
