OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A legislator wants to give voters the power to approve the use traffic cameras in their cities.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Democratic Rep. Chris Hurst of Enumclaw says that if the Legislature doesn’t act this session, he expects an initiative on the ballot soon. The former police detective says he’s worried cities are using the traffic lights as piggy banks, fining people for very minor transgressions.

His proposal is one of a couple bills being written about traffic cameras. One bill being considered by incoming Rep. Connie Ladenburg of Tacoma is more lenient, but standardizes what actions can be fined, including preventing ticketing of drivers as long as they slow down and don’t endanger pedestrians.

But Ladenburg says she opposes giving voters a say on traffic cameras.
