The first wave of expected precipitation has started moving out of the Vancouver area, with more expected after 10 p.m., according to this updated blog post by Columbian weather blogger Steve Pierce.

Light snow was falling in downtown Vancouver as of 5:40 p.m., with doppler radar showing widespread snowfall throughout the Vancouver-Portland metro area. The snow briefly started accumulating on cars in downtown Vancouver but not on pavement.

A winter weather advisory for a mix of light snow and freezing rain remains in effect until midnight tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Light snow began falling in the 5 o’clock hour. Snow and freezing rain is expected until about 10 p.m., followed by rain, snow and freezing rain from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. Wednesday, then rain or freezing rain after 1 a.m.

Winds could gust as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Snow accumulations will range from a trace up to 1 inch, followed by up to a tenth of an inch of freezing rain by midnight. Ice accumulations will likely be heaviest near the Columbia River Gorge.

Snow and ice are expected to make roads slick and hazardous for travel. Ice will also make sidewalks very slick this evening.
