LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Shadai Farm has paid the day’s top price of $540,000 for stakes-winning mare Secret Gypsy at Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale.

The 6-year-old daughter of Sea of Secrets out of the Rahy mare Miss Utada was consigned by Eaton Sales as a broodmare prospect.

She won eight races in her career — including the Grade II 2010 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga, Grade III Endine Stakes at Delaware and the 2009 Grade II Distaff Handicap at Aqueduct — for earnings of $596,926.

Keeneland said in a statement that Naohiro Hosoda, who signed the sales ticket on Shadai’s behalf, said Secret Gypsy would be retired from racing and sent to Japan to be bred.

Keeneland sold 205 horses on Tuesday for $8,912,600, an average of $43,476. During the second session in 2010, 228 horses brought $11,401,200, an average of $50,005.

The sale continues through Friday.
