Sex offender update

The Columbian
Published: January 13, 2011, 12:00am

John Francis Ammons, twice convicted of sex crimes, is no longer living at a home in the North Image neighborhood and has registered as living homeless in Clark County, officials say.

Ammons, 34, is classified as a Level 3 sex offender, the group considered most likely to commit new sex crimes, according to a bulletin from the Sex Offender Registration Unit of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Ammons has been convicted of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes and third-degree rape of a child, officials said. His victims were a 6-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

In 1998, 1999 and 2007, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender.

Ammons is white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 192 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He is not being sought by police. He will be monitored by officers with the sheriff’s unit, the Vancouver Police Department’s Sex Offender Tracking Unit and the state Department of Corrections.

The Columbian’s policy is to publish a story and photo when Level 3 sex offenders move to Clark County, or to new addresses in Clark County or become homeless here.

Officials say it’s dangerous for Level 3 sex offenders to be homeless, because they are more difficult to track.
