Weather Eye: Winter’s not over, but there are hints of spring

Oh, the joys of weather forecasting and watching the weather in the great Northwest.

I received a note from local weather watcher Rod Sager, who presented his reflection of the past week or so of weather.

“Forecasting winter weather in Western Washington requires not a science degree but a theological degree because only God knows what is going to happen. Last Friday’s forecast for this week was a foot of snow, Saturday it was downgraded to 2-4 inches of snow, Sunday downgraded to minor snow with sleet and freezing rain. Then Monday the forecast changed to flurries with sleet and freezing rain. And on Tuesday when the event unfolded it became mostly sleet and freezing rain with no real accumulation at all. I love weather watching but I am glad I don’t have to make a living doing it. For all you meteorologists out there, my hats off to you working so hard at a job where God loves to toy with you.”

Moving right along, it feels so balmy out there compared with the short-lived cold snap, almost springlike, for sure. I knew I could smell the ocean early Wednesday. On a positive note, the stores have the new season garden seeds on display, primroses and spring bulbs blooming inside. Yeah, we still have a ways to go with winter, but looking ahead can be distracting to the gray skies and rain.

For the third or fourth time this winter, our friends and neighbors in the Puget Sound region enjoyed (maybe not) another episode of ground-covering snowfall. The old adage that whenever Seattle gets snow, Portland doesn’t is still hanging in there.

Surprising enough, my e-mail inbox is full of readers who expressed disappointment that we didn’t get the earlier predicted snowfall. They really want snow! Kinda hard to please everyone, I guess, but winter isn’t over yet. And I won’t even mention that we could get another round of cold in the near future.

Meanwhile, the robins and the squirrels are busy, wondering what all the fuss was about.
