Elephant ears were cooking but the oil caught fire and ruined the kitchen of Scott and Leeann Johnson on Sunday morning.

The fire broke out at 9:35 a.m. at 18403 N.E. Lucia Falls Road. The fire started on the stove top.

“It started the back wall on fire and then went right up and extended into the cabinets,” said Fire District 3 Capt. Drew Simpson. “Once it got into the cabinets, the kitchen was pretty much fully involved.”

The family of seven and one visitor escaped unharmed, officials said.

Firefighters responding from Station 33 near Battle Ground Lake contained the blaze to the kitchen, though there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house. Three fire engines and 12 firefighters from Fire District 3 and Clark County Fire & Rescue, and one deputy from Clark County Sheriffs Office, responded to the scene.

The home is insured.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family.
