It is a good weekend to pursue indoor activities, that’s for sure. The rain was coming down Saturday evening faster than it could run off, making lakes and ponds just about everywhere. Today will be no different, as a long plume of sub-tropical moisture streams our way. Then showers later tonight and Monday. Could be worse — at least you don’t have to shovel it, right?
There sure has been a wide variety of extreme weather around the globe this winter; seems like a lot of snow and a lot of rain. All of which eventually results in flooding. With high freezing levels in the Northwest, snow is melting off at a pretty rapid clip and rivers are bank-full and in some cases over their banks. The National Weather Service has a flood watch or warning out for many areas of the state, both east and west.
So unusual to see the highs in the 50s in mid-January while up in the Yukon it is running about 100 degrees cooler. We get a short break in a couple of days, with highs dropping back into the 40s and somewhat of a dry spell before more rain returns by later in the week. At least, that is the plan. I don’t see a return to very cold weather and snow or ice any time soon.
We have seen the devastating floods in Australia.
Brazil has had floods as well. Over 12 inches of rain fell in just a few hours, about 40 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, and about 511 people were killed, mainly due to landslides. This was the worst single-day natural disaster in history there.
