GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A medical official in the Gaza Strip says one Palestinian has been killed and two others wounded in violence along the border with Israel.

Gaza’s Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya said the casualties were caused by Israeli tank fire. There was no word on their identities.

The military had no comment on the claims of tank fire. But it said Gaza militants fired five mortar shells at Israel earlier Tuesday. The shells landed in open areas, causing no injuries or damage.

Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza, urged armed Palestinian factions last week to stop firing rockets at Israel.

It warned that continued attacks could draw Israeli retaliation and threaten a two-year-old cease fire. Smaller armed groups have rejected Hamas’ appeals for calm.
