SEATTLE (AP) — The Washington Transportation Department is confident it can overcome objections that the tunnel planned under downtown Seattle could damage the historic old Federal Building.

The project administrator, Ron Paananen, told the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce the problems are being discussed and won’t prevent replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct with the tunnel.

The federal General Services Administration told the department last month the tunneling could affect the integrity of the nearly century-old building at First and Marion.

Paananen updated the Seattle City Council Tuesday on the $1.35 billion tunnel project. He said it would force the demolition of another building, the Western Building, which provides space for about 100 artists.
