Prep roundup: Evergreen boys power past Union for 4A GSHL victory

Edmondson leads balanced attack for Plainsmen

The Evergreen boys basketball team went inside to stay in the thick of the race for the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title.

The Plainsmen took the ball to the hoop and scored frequently in the paint during a big third-quarter run, leading Evergreen to an 82-73 win over Union.

The win pushed the Plainsmen (10-5, 5-2) past Union (9-4 ,4-2) into second place in the 4A GSHL.

Warren Edmondson led five Plainsmen in double figures with 18 points. Caleb Dressler had 15 points, Richie Townsend 13, Stefan Foulstone 11 and Tre Clark added 10.

Dressler scored seven points and Derrik Pleasant and Foulstone added five each in a key third-quarter run for Evergreen, when the Plainsmen turned a 38-37 halftime deficit into a 65-53 lead.

Jordan Chatman scored a game-high 28 points for the Titans, who were coming off a non-league win Monday over sixth-ranked Kentwood.

Boys basketball

At Hudson’s Bay 59, Columbia River 50 — Jakoda Taylor hit two of his five 3-pointers in a big second quarter for Bay as the Eagles seized control.

After a scrappy first quarter marred by turnovers by both teams, Hudson’s Bay took a 21-12 advantage in the second quarter to lead 29-19 at halftime.

Taylor scored 17 points to lead Bay, and Mehdi Berrissoul had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles. Isaiah Smith led River with 20 points.

At Prairie 62, Fort Vancouver 52 — Prairie got off to a fast start before getting into foul trouble. But the Falcons bounced back in the second half to secure the win.

Prairie led 24-8 after the first quarter before Fort was able to cut the margin to 29-27 by halftime.

Keaton Jackson had 17 points and 13 rebounds for Prairie before fouling out with three minutes to play.

At Camas 66, Kelso 56 — Bryan Butler had 11 assists and only two turnovers as the Papermakers won at home.

Mark Eppinger scored 22 points and Jacob Kaler added 19 for the Papermakers.

Mountain View 60, at Skyview 53 — Zach Torson scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half as the Thunder overcame a 31-26 halftime deficit for the non-league victory.

Torson made three 3-pointers and was 7 of 8 from the line in a varied attack. Ryan Johnson added 11 points for Mountain View (7-7).

Mark Morris 53, at Hockinson 36 — Defense set the tone for the visiting Monarchs, who avenged an earlier loss to the Hawks by forcing 16 Hockinson turnovers and making the home team take tough shots against the shot clock.

A 15-4 second quarter gave Mark Morris a nine-point halftime lead that the Monarchs gradually stretched during the second half.

Joshua Hall scored 14 points and hauled in 10 rebounds, but had to work hard for everything, according to Hockinson coach Matt Gruher.

Ridgefield 64, White Salmon 59 — Sam Landerholm scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds, leading the Spudders in a close game.

King’s Way 53, Kalama JV 49 — All-around performances from Jay Becker and Christian Bukant led King’s Way to victory.

Becker had 15 points, seven assists, and six steals. Bukant recorded 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Girls basketball

Battle Ground 46, at Heritage 39 — Nikki Bond completed a couple of three-point plays in the final quarter, helping the Tigers to the win at Heritage.

Bond scored 18 points and Haley Grossman added 11 for the Tigers. Tashawna Gordon led Heritage with 13 points.

Evergreen 60, at Union 28 — The visiting Plainsmen dominated around the basket for the 4A GSHL win.

Justine Joudrey scored 25 points for Evergreen. She hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, and had six steals in the game. All eight Evergreen players scored, Shamerica Scott accounting for 11 points.

Scott grabbed 11 rebounds and Jessica Chatman had 10. The Plainsmen led by 19 points at halftime.

At Columbia River 62, Hudson’s Bay 45 — Lauren Heller scored 19 points and the host Chieftains controlled the game the whole way.

Heller made 13 of 14 free throws as Columbia River outscored Hudson’s Bay 25-8 from the line. The Chieftains led 48-25 after three quarters.

At Prairie 63, Fort Vancouver 21 — Prairie made seven 3-pointers and had no trouble against the visiting Trappers.

Heather Corral scored 17 points to lead the Falcons. Angela Gelhar had nine points, six assists, and six steals. Lanae Adams led Prairie with eight rebounds to go along with her six points.

At Woodland 65, R.A. Long 29 — Charity Arn had 27 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals as the Beavers romped to remain unbeaten in Class 2A Greater St. Helens League play.

Emily Smith added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Woodland (12-2, 6-0 2A GSHL), and Taylor McCullough had five points, seven assists and six steals.

Mark Morris 51, Hockinson 40 — Jenna Haagen scored 15 points for the Hawks, who were trying to play catch-up all night after a sluggish first half.

Tayler Blackman led Mark Morris with 16 points.

La Center 67, at Stevenson 60 — Marissa Moore and Kiley Monson had monster games, leading the Wildcats on the road.

Moore scored 21 points, recorded seven assists, and had four steals. Monson just missed a 20-20 game with 20 points and 18 rebounds.

At White Salmon 35, Ridgefield 34 — The Spudders had three chances to take the lead in the last 30 seconds but came up short. Lizzy Vance led Ridgefield with 14 points.

King’s Way/Seton 35, Kalama JV 33 — Callie Crawford made two free throws for the win with no time left on the clock. Sarah Ferguson led King’s Way/Seton with 17 points. Crawford had 11.
