Mavunga, Miami (Ohio) hold off Akron 84-76

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Julian Mavunga scored a career-high 25 points and Antonio Ballard and Nick Winbush had double-doubles to lead Miami (Ohio) to an 84-76 win over Akron on Wednesday night.

Mavunga shot 6 of 11 from the field and made 12 of 15 free throws for the RedHawks (8-10, 3-1 Mid-American Conference). Ballard had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Winbush added 11 points and 12 boards to help Miami outrebound the Zips 42-31.

The RedHawks led 39-28 at the break as Orlando Williams scored all 12 of his points in the first half, hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers.

Although Miami built a 14-point lead in the second half, Akron (10-8, 1-3) got within seven points on four occasions, the last time at 75-68 with 1:31 left. The RedHawks hit 6 of 6 free throws in the next 29 seconds, then 3 of 6 in the final 29 seconds to finish 23 of 28 from the line.

Nikola Cvetinovic led the Zips with 15 points.
