KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — Two Hanford contractors say 1,600 employees will be laid off as $1.96 billion in federal stimulus money ends for cleanup work at the nuclear reservation.

CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. received $1.3 billion for ground water cleanup and is the hardest hit. It told workers Wednesday that it plans two phases of voluntary and involuntary layoffs this summer to cut 1,350 jobs.

Mission Support Alliance told its workers it expects to lay off 300 workers by the end of September.

The Tri-City Herald also reports that two other contractors, Washington Closure Hanford and Washington River Protection Solutions, do not expect layoffs caused by the end of stimulus money.
