Kitzhaber: Reduce health plan payments to doctors

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber says his budget recommendations will include significant cuts in Oregon Health Plan benefits and payments to doctors who provide services to those patients.

Kitzhaber discussed his budget plans with Oregon newspaper editors in a Monday meeting that was organized by The Associated Press.

Kitzhaber says he’s worried about reducing payments so low that it becomes unprofitable for doctors to treat patients on the Oregon Health Plan. He also says kicking patients off the health plan wouldn’t save money in the long run because those patients would end up in the emergency room.

The governor will release his budget recommendations Feb. 1. They will include steep cuts, reflecting the end of federal stimulus dollars.
