KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia and South Korea say they plan to prosecute 12 Somali pirates captured by commandos in two separate raids on hijacked ships.

Naval commandos from the two countries last Friday rescued a total of 44 crew members whose vessels were seized by Somali pirates. The Malaysian chemical tanker was attacked in the Gulf of Aden, while the South Korean-operated cargo ship was hijacked in the Arabian Sea.

A Malaysian federal police spokesman said Tuesday that seven pirates captured by Malaysia will be taken into police custody when they arrive in Kuala Lumpur next week.

South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said Seoul’s “stance is to prosecute pirates rather than swapping them” for other fishermen being held by pirates in a separate hijacking case.
