DETROIT (AP) — A federal judge has set an Oct. 4 trial date for a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a crowded Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas 2009 with a bomb hidden in his underwear.

Federal Judge Nancy Edmunds set the trial date for 24-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO’-mahr fah-ROOK’ ahb-DOOL’-moo-TAH’-lahb) during a Tuesday hearing.

Federal authorities say Abdulmutallab tried to detonate the hidden bomb as the Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam was approaching Detroit. About 300 people were on board.

Authorities say the defendant caused a small fire but the device didn’t explode. Passengers jumped on top of him and helped extinguish the flames.

Abdulmutallab has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
