OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Doug McDermott isn’t just the best player for Creighton, he’s the top freshman in the Missouri Valley Conference.

First-year coach Greg McDermott says it’s easier to have his son on the floor if he’s earned the time and backed it up with production.

The younger McDermott is averaging 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game to lead the Bluejays. He may wind up becoming the first freshman to make All-MVC first team.

Doug McDermott originally signed with Northern Iowa. Panthers coach Ben Jacobson granted him a release after the older McDermott resigned from Iowa State to take the Creighton job last April.

Northern Iowa (15-6, 6-3 MVC) and Creighton (13-8, 5-4) will meet for the first time this season in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Wednesday night.
