Officials with the Vancouver Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Office were mum on the circumstances that led to a man’s arrest Tuesday in central Vancouver in connection with a shooting.

Sgt. Kathy McNicholas of the police department said the man was arrested in association with a shooting at “Red Haven,” apparently meaning an apartment complex in east Hazel Dell. The man, she said, is not connected to a Saturday night drive-by shooting in the 2000 block of Todd Road.

An investigation by the Clark County Major Crimes Unit is ongoing, said Sgt. Randon Walker of the sheriff’s office. He said he could not release the arrested man’s name.

The man apparently dropped a gun at about 2:45 p.m. on Ash Street, near Harney Elementary School, 3212 E. Evergreen Blvd., and took off running. Police pursued the man and took him into custody with the help of the police dog Spencer a short while later at the intersection of Ash Street and Clark Avenue.

Harney Elementary School was briefly locked down while police chased the man.

The Vancouver Fire Department and American Medical Response were dispatched to the intersection to treat the suspect for “animal bites,” according to emergency dispatch logs. The extent of the suspect’s injuries are not known.

Walker said additional information could be released sometime Wednesday.
