Skamania winter festival cancelled

CARSON — The annual Winterfest scheduled for Saturday at Oldman Pass Sno-Park in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has been cancelled.

Warm temperatures and rain have reduced significantly the snow on the tubing hill and on the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.

Angling seminars start Wednesday

PORTLAND — A series of five free fishing seminar are scheduled in February and March at Fishermen’s Marine & Outdoor, 1120 N. Hayden Meadows Drive.

All the seminars begin at 6:30 p.m.

Guide Jon Huston will discuss winter steelhead fishing in Southwest Washington on Wednesday.

Other seminars include Feb. 9, Snake River steelhead fishing with guide Tony Cadeboscq; Feb. 23, tactics for trophy winter steelhead with guide Chris Nordling; March 2, Columbia River spring chinook with guide Phil Paradis, and March 16, walleye fishing with guide Paul Woodrum.

Wildlife League meets Wednesday

The Vancouver Wildlife League will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd.

A representative of the National Marine Fisheries Service will discuss options under review for the future spending of Mitchell Act money. The act finances a portion of the salmon and steelhead hatchery production in the Columbia River system.

ONC to hear about Swiss Alps

PORTLAND — A free program on ski touring in Switzerland will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Multnomah Arts Center auditorium, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway.

The monthly meeting of the Portland chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club, the event will feature Jonathan Larsen, owner of Edelweiss Tour, who will present a show about touring through the Alps.

A potluck dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. will precede the program.

Klickitat park transfer likely

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will consider today transferring Brooks Memorial State Park to the Central Klickitat Conservation District.

The park is near Goldendale along U.S. Highway 97. It is the sixth park to be considered for transfer to other government agencies on the condition the park remains open for public recreation.

State lawmakers and the governor have urged the transfer of 13 parks to appropriate local governments as a state budget-cutting measure.
