SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) — A Seattle man has been arrested in the slaying of a 7-year-old girl — more than a half-century after she was abducted near her northern Illinois community of Sycamore and killed.

The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office said Friday that they’ve charged 71-year-old Jack Daniel McCullough in the abduction and slaying of Maria Ridulph.

The girl was abducted Dec. 3, 1957, and her remains were discovered on April 26, 1958 in Jo Davies County.

A news release from the prosecutor’s office says that President Dwight Eisenhower and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover requested daily updates on the investigation during the search by more than 1,000 officers.

They say the investigation went cold after McCullough joined the military and changed his name. .

McCullough is expected to be extradited to Illinois.
