MINGORA, Pakistan (AP) — Police say militants attacked a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, killing three police officers and wounding one.

Police officer Jahanzeb Khan says the militants attacked the checkpoint in the Karora area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province around midnight Saturday. Jahanzeb is the police chief of Shangla district, where Karora is located.

Karora is near the Swat Valley, an area that Taliban militants overran several years ago before the army launched a major offensive in the spring of 2009. Violence has dropped in the area, but militants still carry out occasional attacks.
