WASHINGTON (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have placed right-handed reliever Marcos Mateo on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow.

Mateo had to leave in the 10th inning of Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals. He was flown back to Chicago, and the team was awaiting the results of an MRI.

The Cubs also purchased the contract of Ramon Ortiz from Triple-A Iowa to start Tuesday night’s game at Washington.

Ortiz was 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA for Iowa. He was needed because Carlos Zambrano is on the disabled list.

The team also flip-flopped a move they made Monday, recalling reliever Chris Carpenter from Iowa and optioning starter Casey Coleman to the Triple-A club.

Coleman started Monday because Ryan Dempster was recovering from an abdominal ailment.
