Frigate Jarrett joins mothball fleet in Bremerton

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The latest addition to the Navy’s mothball fleet at Bremerton is the frigate USS Jarrett, formerly based at San Diego.

The Navy says it’s for sale, after 27years of service. If there are no buyers in a couple of years, the Jarrett will be scrapped. Two other mothballed frigates drew interest from Portugal and Turkey but neither deal went through.

The Navy is decommissioning the Perry-class frigates because their role in anti-submarine warfare and protecting convoys is being taken over by newer ships.

The Kitsap Sun reports the mothball fleet includes four carriers, the three frigates, 16 submarines and two other nuclear powered vessels.
