WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have recalled left-hander Ross Detwiler from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
The Nationals needed an extra starter after playing a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.
Detwiler is making his first major league start of the season. The No. 6 overall selection of the 2007 draft was 2-9 with a 4.74 ERA over parts of three seasons with the Nationals.
Detwiler is 6-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 16 starts this season for Syracuse.
To move room for Detwiler, the Nationals designated right-handed pitcher Collin Balester for assignment.
Balester is 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA in eight appearances with Washington this season.
