BEND, Ore. (AP) — A Deschutes County sheriff’s spokesman says a 17-year-old boy who had just reached the summit of central Washington’s South Sister peak with several other juveniles and two adults wandered off trail and fell 20 feet into a crevasse during the descent. Deputy Rhett Hemphill says the youth was able to crawl out on his own and suffered only minor injuries in the Tuesday afternoon mishap. He was not identified.

His party called 911 and rescue medics responded.

Hemphill says the teen was treated for his injuries and for exposure. Then he and the rest of his hiking group were escorted back to the trailhead parking lot at Devils Lake, where friends and relatives were waiting to take them home.
