CLEVELAND (AP) — New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter doubled in the eighth inning, his 2,997th hit, leaving him three away from 3,000 for his career.

Jeter lined the first pitch from Justin Masterson over right fielder Austin Kearns’ head, and coasted into second with his 479th career double. In his previous plate appearances, he struck out, flied out and walked against Masterson.

Jeter is close to becoming the 28th major leaguer with 3,000 hits. When the 37-year-old reaches the milestone, he will be the first player in New York’s fabled history to do it having only played for the Yankees. He will resume his quest on Thursday when the Yankees open a four-game series at home against Tampa Bay.
