MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tampa Bay designated hitter Johnny Damon has left the Rays’ game against Minnesota after being hit on the left hand with a pitch from Francisco Liriano.

The Rays say Damon has a contusion on his hand. He was hit in the third inning Wednesday, and shook his hand while grimacing in pain as he trotted to first base. He remained in the game to run the bases, but Sam Fuld pinch-hit for him in the fourth inning.

Damon was taken for X-rays, and the severity of the injury was not immediately known.

It was the second time in as many at-bats that Damon got hit by a pitch. He was hit in the back to start the game.
