SEATTLE (AP) — The University of Washington began construction Wednesday on 542,000 square feet of labs and office space in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood.

The groundbreaking is for the third phase of UW Medicine’s research hub on the northern edge of downtown Seattle. It will include up to three buildings scheduled for completion in spring 2013. The first building will be an 183,000-square-foot laboratory building that will house more than 400 researchers.

They will be exploring the fields of vision sciences, immunology, kidney research, rheumatology and infectious diseases.
