GENEVA (AP) — Doctors treating Colombian cyclist Juan Mauricio Soler say he’s showing signs of “serious cognitive deficits” after waking from an induced coma three weeks after crashing in the Tour of Switzerland.
A spokesman for St. Gallen Hospital in eastern Switzerland says the 28-year-old rider can follow simple commands and move all four limbs, but isn’t able to speak.
Philipp Lutz says the rider appears to have suffered shearing injuries to important brain paths when he crashed and fractured his skull on June 16.
Lutz said in an email Thursday that Soler is also having trouble swallowing and will require intensive neurological rehabilitation.
He says Soler’s condition is stable enough to move him to hospital in Pamplona, Spain, soon.
