ROME (AP) — The Italian Olympic Committee has ruled that the president of the country’s winter sports federation Giovanni Morzenti was elected in an irregular vote and removed him from office.
Morzenti won the FISI election in April 2010 with 50.6 percent of the votes but a small ski association asked that the election be annulled for irregularities including reported falsely signed ballots.
CONI is expected to name an extraordinary commissioner to take over the federation next week, which could result in the reinstatement of Alpine director Claudio Ravetto, who resigned at the end of last season after clashing with Morzenti.
Ravetto guided Italy to an unexpected six medals at last season’s world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, including three from Christof Innerhofer.
Morzenti said his lawyers would decide whether to take the case before the Italian justice system.
