NEW YORK (AP) — The game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays scheduled for Friday night has been postponed because of rain, delaying Derek Jeter’s pursuit of 3,000 hits.

The game was called more than an hour before it was set to begin. Rain was falling at Yankee Stadium, with thunder and lightning overhead. No makeup date was announced.

Jeter has 2,998 career hits. The Yankees shortstop said before the postponement that he was pulling himself from next week’s All-Star game so he could rest his injured calf.
