ST. LOUIS (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson says J.J. Putz will be his closer when he returns from the 15-day disabled list.

David Hernandez was 5 for 5 in save chances as the replacement closer after finishing a 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Gibson was noncommittal on the topic Friday night because it was right after the game.

Gibson pointed out that Hernandez is in his first season as a reliever, gaining experience, and on the days when Putz wasn’t available, the team would have a nice backup option.

Putz, 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 21 saves in 25 chances, threw in the bullpen Friday and is set for another session Sunday before the All-Star break. The right-hander has been on the DL with elbow tendinitis.
