U23 Timbers fall short in homecoming

CAMAS — Brent Richards and Nick Palodichuk received a warm welcome back on Friday at Doc Harris Stadium.

But the Camas High graduates and their Portland Timbers U-23s teammates were outdone by goalkeeper Andrew Kowan and the Abbotsford Mariners.

Kowan made nine saves, and the visitors from British Columbia beat the Timbers 2-1 in a Premier Development League match before a crowd of 2,453.

“It was a nice homecoming,” Richards said. “I like Camas. I like this stadium. This is home for me.”

Richards, who is entering his senior season at the University of Washington, scored the Timbers goal on a penalty kick in the 38th minute. But goals in the 19th minute and in first-half extra time lifted the Mariners.

“It was a little nostalgic coming back,” Richards said, adding that he hadn’t been back since a renovation of Doc Harris Stadium was completed last September. “It’s quite something.”

Friday’s loss hurt the playoff chances for the Timbers U23s (5-5-2) in the PDL’s Northwest Division. A year ago, a more-experienced Timbers U23s side won all 20 of its matches and the national PDL title with Richards named the league’s MVP.

Palodichuk enrolled at Duke University in North Carolina for spring term and will be a freshman for the Blue Devils in the fall. On Friday, he was whistled for six fouls and took one shot.

“It’s great to be in this environment with all the fans here,” Palodichuk said. “I just wanted to come out here and perform for them.”
