BEND, Ore. (AP) — A former real estate broker from Bend has been arrested on charges of stealing from the trust of a man who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease and moved into her home.

Authorities say Tami Sawyer was arrested Sunday arriving in Portland from Mexico, where she has property.

She was indicted on the state charges last week. Along with her husband, she also faces trial on federal fraud and money laundering charges.

The Bend Bulletin quotes state and court documents showing that after Thomas Middleton named Sawyer as trustee of his estate, he moved into her home in 2008 and died by physician-assisted suicide.

The paper says the documents show Middleton’s house was sold for more than $200,000 and the money deposited in the account of one of Sawyer’s businesses.
