TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Joint Base Lewis-McChord Lt. Gen Curtis Scaparrotti took his command Monday as the No. 2 American officer in Afghanistan.

He’s the commander of the International Security Force Afghanistan Joint Command, working with NATO and Afghan security forces in coordinating the war’s daily operations.

About 700 Lewis-McChord soldiers are with Scaparrotti in Kabul for a year-long deployment with the command group.

The News Tribune reports Scaparrotti will oversee President Barack Obama’s drawdown plans.

For now, Scaparrotti reports to Gen. David Petraeus. Marine Lt. Gen. John R. Allen is to take command in the next few months as Petraeus moves to his new post as Central Intelligence Agency director.
