LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (AP) — Paramedics who stopped by to check the welfare of a Snohomish County, Wash., man found him dead and found 40 dogs, six cats and six birds living in crates in the home.

Snohomish County licensing and animal control manager Vicki Lubrin says investigators believe the dogs had been without food or water for about three days. They are now being cared for at the Everett Animal Shelter. The dogs and puppies are mostly miniature pinschers.

Animal control officers say the 58-year-old Lake Stevens-area owner did not have a license to house so many animals, and did not have adequate outdoor exercise space for them.

The man found dead Friday has not been identified. His death is not believed to be suspicious.
